As she gives her friend the details of her husband's death, she recounts the major events in their lives.Ramatoulaye's husband, Modou Fall, died suddenly of a heart attack. Following the structures of her Muslim faith, Ramatoulaye must remain in seclusion (Mirasse) for a period of four months and ten days. Aissatou, to whom the letter is written, immigrated to the United States and pursued a feminist, monogamist relationship.It features multiple references to the superstar athletes who have become professional athletes. The traits and characteristics of these characters strongly resemble those of a leader and a determined worker.The novel is often used in literature classes focusing on women's roles in post-colonial Africa. It won the first Noma Prize for Publishing in Africa in 1980.
