Description On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (ISBN 978-1-4000-7384-9) is a fantasy novel published in 2008, written by Andrew Peterson. It is the first book in The Wingfeather Saga series, and is followed by North! Or Be Eaten, The Monster in the Hollows, and The Warden and the Wolf King.On The Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness is about three siblings, Janner, Tink and Leeli Igiby, their mother, Nia Igiby, their ex-pirate grandfather, Podo Helmer, and the Fangs of Dang. The Fangs lizard-like conquerors of the Igiby family's country whose lives' purpose seems to be to make keep all the humans in the land of Skree, where the Igiby family lives, miserable and unable to fight back, and who serve a mysterious person called Gnag the Nameless.Janner is the determined oldest brother, who Nia and Podo expect to protect the others. Tink is constantly hungry, and ready for mischief with his brother, such as exploring in the nearby dangerous woods. Leeli is kind, and musically talented, and crippled, but can be surprisingly fast when she has to be and kicks one of the feared Fangs of Dang to save her dog, Nugget. Nia is reluctant for most of the first book to tell what she used to do before she had children, or to tell the children anything about their father. The paperback book contains two maps, several illustrations, and appendices including poems and same of the Fangs' bureaucratic forms, all by Peterson. The fifty-one chapter book has three short prologues, describing the different countries and well as an anecdote about how the world got its name. The author uses humorous footnotes as an aid to his storytelling throughout.
